RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

The work involves development of an efficient scheme that combines the finite elements with an optimization scheme based on a quadratic programming to determine the equilibrium composition profiles in strained quantum dots. Composition profiles are strongly dependent on the shape of the quantum dots, as strain relaxation in dots with steeper sidewalls allows for segregation of the larger alloy component in the regions near the apex.

Three numerical tools to simulate wear for micro-machine applications were developed. They include, the Wear-Processor, a finite element based simulation tool. The second tool is a computationally efficient, incremental implementation of a wear model on the global scale (Global Incremental Wear Model - GIWM) for computing wear on the interacting surfaces of simple geometries. The last tool is a user-defined subroutine UMESHMOTION in ABAQUS. These tools were used to identify the wear coefficients from tribo-experiments. The Wear-Processor was extended to simulate wear in 2D transient tribo-systems like micro gears and also being applied to study wear of advanced coatings using parameters identified from tribo-experiments.

A numerical tool was developed to simulate wear in axi-symmetric tribo-systems. The finite element based simulation tool, the Wear-Processor implements a relevant wear model on the local scale.

The work involved coupled fluid and thermal field analysis (using ANSYS) of a micro machined thermal conductivity sensor used in a micro gas chromatograph. The sensor output signal showed a dependence on fluid flow and temperature. The aim of the thesis was to optimize the sensor performance by minimizing the observed parasitic effects through design modifications. The simulations showed that design modifications could partly solve this problem.
FE electrostatic simulations on a parallel plate and inter-digital capacitor structures were performed using ANSYS. Different capacitor structure designs were studied for determining the optimum structure design that maximized “Electro-luminescence” on one of the coated microcapacitor plates.

FEM Simulations of thermo-mechanical stresses using ANSYS were carried out on one of Bosch's chemical sensor for automotive applications. The failure (stress induced voiding) of thin platinum films (electrodes) due to residual stress gradients resulting from the elevated processing temperatures was analyzed. The simulations showed that at the location where voiding occured were subjected to steep stress gradients. The aim of these simulations was to restrict the damage in the metal film by modifying the sensor design.
